I started things off with Flight of the Killer Beez. The dinner crowd was still lingering around, so I knew I’d have to gently separate the heads from the regulars. The bees did the trick.
Before you knew it I was easin in with originals and re-edits I’d re-discovered the night before. When I finally got brave enough to look up from the decks, I could hardly believe it. There, in front of me, was a crowd of people on the dance floor, mouthing the lyrics to all the wu joints I thought only I loved.
That was back in December of 2008. My first Ms. Soulflower Tribute. Soon after we began to host joints on the regular. My dudes Fplus & KPizzle (who would later become part of the Soulflower Group) would help me honor artists like the Soulquarians, Outkast, The Roots, Michael Jackson, Quest & Raphael Saadiq just to name a few.
But we never once revisited the place where it all started. Tomorrow we rectify that with Enter the Wu-Tang, A Slowerflower Tribute.
Oddly enough this one has been taxing. Not only have we changed the date twice, but the venue as well. Not to mention the costs involved have escalated & we’ve had to modify the line-up not once, not twice but three times. We’re not robots yo. We can only take soo much before we want to throw the towel in. But…we haven’t and we won’t.
Enter the Wu also marks the return of themed swag. Last year we suffered from a mild case of hurt feelings after someone suggested that our swag lacked uniformity and a clear design. This year we’ve decided that we miss creating themes so uniformity & uninvited commentary be damned.
We hope tomorrow nights event goes well. We’ve worked hard and anticipate the results will amplify that. Sometimes returning to the place where everything started is exactly what you need on your journey to forge ahead.
